Humanizing an Ecommerce? Does It Work or Is It Just Marketing? 🤔
This is a small note that might darken rather than shed light; it’s not a deep reflection, but it’s been on my mind for a long time.
Does it make sense to create a sealed-off brand? You can almost smell the plastic.
The point I want to make: does it make sense to lie about the details and the photos?
To set the context, imagine a T-shirt. Imagine it on Facebook Marketplace, now imagine it on an ecommerce site. Does it look different?
Why do products on ecommerce sites look perfect?
In the real world, for those who don’t know, ecommerce stores usually take their products to a studio for preproduction (ironing, stuffing, cleaning, positioning, etc). The photo is taken in a clean, well-lit environment and then digitally retouched to remove imperfections and maybe color-corrected.
The product you see in a photo is never the one you actually get.
Does that make sense? I mean, I think it’s widely accepted that those images are an idealized representation of what we want. It has more to do with us than with the product itself.
Do you think it makes sense to use real images in ecommerce?
Bonus value: It adds up to be honest about the materials.
Edit:
Yes, the posts we upload also go through post-production, and sometimes the message gets lost. But publishing something without any correction would be too much.
